Bitcoin Holds Bollinger Line at $84K Despite Weak Momentum
Bitcoin's latest pullback caught a few desks off guard. It dropped toward $84,000 after a failed attempt above $87,000, yet the lower Bollinger band on the daily chart refused to crack. That's the part that surprised me mildly — support holding this cleanly while momentum indicators already look tired.
Why the Dip Stopped Short of a Deeper Break
Price action on Oct. 3 showed BTC at roughly $84,575 according to CoinGecko. The move lower followed two days of rejection near $87,200. Daily RSI slipped below 55 and the MACD histogram turned negative, the first clear sign that buyers have stepped back since late September.
Still, the 20-day Bollinger band lower edge sat right around $83,800 and price respected it. We've seen this band act as a floor during the summer consolidation, so its defense isn't entirely new. But with leverage building again, a clean bounce wasn't the base case most desks carried into the week.
Liquidation Clusters Form on Both Sides
Coinglass heatmaps now show heavy clusters between $83,500 and $83,800 on the long side, and another pocket just above $86,000 for shorts. A quick reclaim of $86,000 would likely squeeze the latter group first. That could explain why dips are finding buyers even as broader risk sentiment stays mixed.
Why does the market keep testing these levels without breaking? Part of the answer sits in the options market, where open interest has shifted toward October expiry strikes clustered near $85,000. Dealers hedging those positions have been active on both sides of the tape.
Broader Context From Rate Markets
Bitcoin's moves have tracked Treasury yields closely since August. The 10-year yield's recent stall below 4.0 percent has kept the cost of carry manageable for leveraged long books. If that yield starts climbing again on stronger US data, the same leverage that supports this bounce could unwind fast. We've seen the pattern play out three times already this year.
ETH/BTC has also held its range, another quiet signal that altcoin rotation hasn't accelerated. That usually points to a market still waiting for a clearer macro cue rather than one preparing for a big directional break.
What to Watch Next
The next obvious levels sit at $85,800 and then $86,400. A sustained move through the latter would open the door to the $87,000 retest that failed earlier. Below $83,800, the next visible support cluster sits near $82,200 from the September swing low.
Volume has thinned on this dip, so any follow-through move will need fresh participation. Without it, price could simply oscillate between the Bollinger bands for another week or two.
This kind of chop tends to catch leveraged traders on the wrong side when it finally resolves, so position sizing matters more than the direction call right now.
