Bitcoin Stays Near $77K as Fed and BoJ Decisions Near
Bitcoin has sat near $77,000 this week while traders have trimmed risk ahead of the Federal Reserve's September 16 decision. The quiet spell masks real caution. Position sizes have shrunk and options activity shows more protection buying than usual for this time of year.
Why the Fed and BoJ Timings Matter
The Fed meeting falls the same week the Bank of Japan holds its own policy gathering. That overlap hasn't happened often. When both central banks move at once, cross-asset volatility tends to rise fast. Bitcoin felt it in late 2022 when the Fed hiked and the yen surged on BoJ tweaks.
Why does that matter? A stronger yen can unwind yen-funded carry trades that have supported risk assets including crypto. We've seen this pattern before. Each time the BoJ surprised markets with even a small shift, Bitcoin gave back gains within days.
Levels That Still Define the Range
Nansen's Nicolai Søndergaard noted traders are focused on $76,000 support and $83,000 resistance. Those lines have held for weeks. A break below $76,000 would likely trigger more stops and push price toward $73,500. The other side, $83,000, would need a clean Fed pause to attract fresh buyers.
So far the market hasn't tested either boundary hard. Volume has stayed light. That's typical when two major central banks are about to speak. No one wants to be caught on the wrong side of a surprise.
What's Still Up in the Air
The Fed's dot plot and any language on balance sheet runoff will set the tone. The BoJ's view on further yield curve control tweaks matters just as much. If the Japanese central bank signals another step away from negative rates, yen strength could accelerate. That flow usually hits Bitcoin first because it's the most liquid risk asset in crypto.
Traders have already reduced leverage. Open interest in Bitcoin futures has dropped since early September. It's not a dramatic move, but it shows positioning has turned defensive. The question now is whether that caution proves justified or just leaves the market short of fuel if both banks deliver dovish surprises.
Watch the reaction in the first hour after each announcement. If Bitcoin fails to hold $76,000 on rising volume, the next stop lower comes quickly. There's no guarantee the range holds once the decisions land.
