Dollar Firms After Hot US Data Rattles EURUSD
Retail sales came in hotter than expected and the dollar didn't waste time showing it. EURUSD eased back through 1.0850 by the New York close, while USDJPY nudged higher toward 152.30. The session wasn't dramatic, but the tone shifted once the numbers hit.
Why the Greenback Picked Up Steam
The data showed consumer spending still running above trend. That caught some leveraged shorts off guard, especially those who had leaned into the idea that the Fed's next move would be a cut. It's not a game-changer on its own, yet it adds weight to the argument that policy easing might stay measured.
Why does that matter? Because positioning in euro and yen had grown stretched. When the data printed, the unwind was quick but orderly. No panic, just a reminder that the dollar can still find bids when growth prints surprise to the upside.
What the Session Actually Revealed
Volume stayed light until the data drop. Then the tape picked up and bids in the dollar index firmed through 104.80. Sterling didn't join the slide, which tells you the move was US-specific rather than a broad risk-off wave. Treasury yields ticked higher in sympathy, with the two-year settling near 3.82 percent.
We've seen this pattern before in past cycles. Stronger-than-expected consumer numbers delay expectations for aggressive easing and the front end of the curve does the heavy lifting. That's exactly what played out today. The euro took the brunt because ECB speakers have been leaning dovish lately, leaving the single currency exposed when US data holds up.
Traders who had faded the dollar earlier in the week got squeezed just enough to cover. Not a full reversal, but the daily chart now shows a higher low from last week's low near 1.0780. Momentum isn't screaming higher yet, though the bias has flipped.
Looking ahead, next week's CPI print will decide if this dollar bid extends or fades. If inflation stays sticky, the recent lows in EURUSD could be tested again. If it cools, the euro might claw back some ground quickly. Either way, the range has narrowed and breakouts are likely to be sharp.
Position sizing still counts here. A single data surprise doesn't rewrite the bigger rate path, so anyone chasing the move should keep stops tight and remember that reversals can come fast when the next headline lands.
