Interactive Brokers Rolls Out Ethereum Staking via Zerohash
Interactive Brokers just gave its crypto clients a way to earn yield on Ethereum holdings.
That move brings staking rewards to an established brokerage with more than $903 billion in client assets. The firm partnered with Zerohash to handle the infrastructure, letting eligible users lock up ETH and collect returns inside an account that already supports trading across 20 digital assets. It's the kind of incremental step that keeps larger clients from drifting to dedicated crypto venues.
Staking Comes to a $900 Billion Platform
Rewards add up. For anyone already holding ETH at Interactive Brokers, the new feature removes the need to move coins elsewhere for yield. Staking rates on Ethereum have hovered in the low single digits lately, but even 3-4% on sizable positions matters when you're not paying extra custody or withdrawal fees.
The announcement landed on Oct. 13, right as spot Ethereum ETFs have pulled in steady inflows and staking participation across the network sits near 30%. Interactive Brokers didn't need to chase headlines. They've watched competitors like Coinbase and Kraken push similar products for years. Now they're meeting demand inside a regulated wrapper that appeals to both retail and smaller institutional accounts.
Why the Timing Matters for Crypto Trading Desks
Competition in brokerage crypto services has sharpened since the ETF approvals. Platforms that once treated digital assets as a sideline now see them as a sticky feature that keeps assets from walking out the door. Interactive Brokers' client base skews toward active traders who already use margin and options. Adding staking lets those users generate a modest return while they wait for price moves, rather than parking coins in cold storage.
Market positioning looks straightforward. The broker isn't trying to become a crypto native. It's offering one more tool inside an existing account that handles equities, futures and FX. That matters for traders who already route through Interactive Brokers for execution quality and don't want to split their book across multiple platforms.
Numbers Behind the Expansion
Client assets topping $903 billion provide scale. Even if only a fraction of that sits in crypto, the absolute dollars available for staking are meaningful. Zerohash supplies the backend, so Interactive Brokers avoids building custody and validator operations from scratch. The 20-asset trading roster already includes major coins, so Ethereum fits the existing risk and compliance framework.
Positioning data from recent months shows retail interest in yield products has remained firm even after the 2022 drawdown. Traders who got used to DeFi returns haven't abandoned the idea. They just want it inside accounts they already trust. Interactive Brokers is answering that directly rather than waiting for another cycle.
Anyone long ETH through the broker now has an option that wasn't there last month. That's a meaningful shift if yields stay attractive and withdrawal friction stays low. Still, staking locks up liquidity and carries smart-contract risk even when handled by a third party. Watch your position sizing here. There's no guarantee returns stay steady if network participation climbs further or if rates adjust with validator economics.
